The Moment

Vol.5, page 121 in the Japanese edition; VIZ Vol.5 at the corresponding panel. Syrup Village, in the wake of Kuro's defeat. Usopp — who fought the whole battle beside them but has never been asked to join — announces he is off to sea, and starts saying goodbye like a man expecting to travel alone: 「今度この村に来る時はよ」「ウソよりずっとウソみてェな冒険譚を聞かせてやるよ!!」 — "WHEN I COME BACK... I'LL HAVE EVEN TALLER TALES TO TELL YOU, ONLY THEY'LL BE TRUE!!" — 「お前らも元気でなまたどっかで会おう」 — "YOU GUYS TAKE CARE. SEE YOU AROUND."

What follows is bafflement on both sides — 「なんで?」 met by 「あ?なんでってお前」, "WHY? / HUH? WHY?" — and then the four balloons the goodbye dissolves into:

「おれ達もう仲間だろ」 — "WE'RE A TEAM, AREN'T WE?" 「キャ……!!キャプテンはおれだろうな!!!」 — "YEAH!!! CAN I BE THE CAPTAIN?" 「ばかいえ!!おれが船長だ!!!」 — "NO WAY!! I'M THE CAPTAIN!!!"

Capped by the least ceremonial welcome in shonen: 「何言ってんだよ早く乗れよ」 — "STOP BABBLING AND GET ON BOARD."

No invitation was ever issued. The series' first crew-claiming scene is a correction of the record: you already belong; the only detail worth arguing is rank. The villagers' epilogue on the next page reads the event correctly — 「...仕方ないか昔から海賊になりたいって言ってたし」, "WELL, THAT'S THAT. HE ALWAYS WANTED TO BE A PIRATE." — 「一人でにぎやかだったからね...キャプテン」, "THE CAPTAIN SURE MADE LIFE FUN AROUND HERE..." — the town's tall-tale teller, promoted to a story worth telling.

The Sentence, Piece by Piece

Two small words carry the scene. もう backdates the membership: not "let's become 仲間" but "we already are" — the joining happened somewhere back in the fighting, unmarked, and is only now being mentioned. だろ, the clipped colloquial presumptive, asserts the fact as shared knowledge and invites a nod: "right?" It is the friendliest member of the だろう family — the same presumptive that, thirteen volumes later and with a rough が bolted on, becomes the collar-grab 仲間だろうが.

Then the gag runs a grammar lesson nobody asked for. Usopp's bid — キャプテンおれだろうな — rides the topic marker は. Luffy's rebuttal — おれ船長だ — switches to が, the particle of exhaustive identification: "the captain is ME (and no one else)." は presents; が elects. Two panels, and the は/が contrast every learner fights for years is staged as a punchline. (Note also the vocabulary swap under the particles: Usopp says the imported キャプテン, Luffy answers with the plain job title 船長 — the applicant speaks in flourish, the incumbent in paperwork.)

Words to keep: 〜達 (たち, pluralizer), もう (already), 船長 (せんちょう, ship's captain), 冒険譚 (ぼうけんたん, adventure tale — Usopp's word for his future), だろ (agreement-seeking presumptive).

The Voice

Recruitment as afterthought. The sentence has no ceremony in it — a shrugged だろ where a formal invitation should be — because in Luffy's model of the world, belonging is a fact you notice, not a contract you sign. The single thing he bothers to contest, instantly and at triple volume, is the captaincy. Priorities. And the closing 「早く乗れよ」 keeps the scene's thermostat exactly where Luffy likes it: the emotional register of a bus departure.

The Echoes

First bell of the claiming sequence the East Blue arc structure is built on: this retroactive filing for Usopp, the full-page declaration for Nami, the two-word abduction of Chopper, the scolding of Vivi. Four scenes, one word, four registers — the leitmotif Japanese readers hear as a repeated bell, and the English record scattered into five different nouns, as documented in the 仲間 Pitfall. Usopp's own goodbye line repays attention too: 「ウソよりずっとウソみてェな冒険譚」 — "tales taller than my lies, except true" — is the liar's whole character arc stated in one clause, and VIZ's "EVEN TALLER TALES... ONLY THEY'LL BE TRUE" carries it clean.

In English

"WE'RE A TEAM, AREN'T WE?" is a genuinely good local solution: the tag question "AREN'T WE?" is the precise English carrier for だろ's agreement-seeking, and "team" fits two boys who just fought side by side. The cost is only visible at series scale — "TEAM" is the first of the five renderings that kept 仲間 from ever becoming one English word — and one nuance goes quietly missing: もう ("already") has no English footprint here, so the retroactive backdating that makes the line so Luffy reads a shade more like a plain statement. The captain gag survives at full force, with one small English invention: Usopp's confident 「キャプテンはおれだろうな!!!」 ("the captain'll be me, right!?") softens into the request "CAN I BE THE CAPTAIN?" — English Usopp asks; Japanese Usopp assumes and is corrected. The bolder liar is the funnier one.

Take-away

Three compact lessons in one gag: だろ for asserting shared knowledge (learn to hear it as "right?" with confidence, not a real question); もう as the one-syllable time machine that backdates a state; and the は/が switch as focus control — は for what we're talking about, が for the exhaustive answer to who. When Japanese fiction wants to characterize someone in two panels, it reaches for exactly these small words. Nothing beyond early-intermediate Japanese appears in the scene, and none of it translates without residue: small grammar, as usual, is where the voice lives.
